Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Bellanascarrow West is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Bellanascarrow West, County Sligo, Ireland. The possible rath sits in low-lying ground south of a river but is now levelled and hidden beneath field undulations. Aerial photography reveals a circular area thirty metres across where dark vegetation marks the probable position of a fosse.
In low-lying ground to S of a river. This possible rath is levelled and is not visible at ground level though there are some undulations in the field. It is visible in an aerial photograph (GSIAP, G 267-8) as a circular area (diam. c. 30m) defined by a band of dark-coloured vegetation, probably representing a fosse. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
