Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinrea

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Eochu's chamber is a ring of black stones, forty paces across. The fort is gone, but his chamber remains beside the place where the fort stood. When Eochu rages, the chamber vibrates like a struck bell. When he sleeps, the chamber cools and goes quiet.
In pasture, atop E-W ridge with commanding view to S; adjacent standing stone (CO086-111---). 'A lios c. 40m in diameter, removed in last century' (pers. comm. S. O' Mahony). No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
