Rathcoon

Located at the crest of the SW-facing slope Corballis Hill. This is a depicted as a circular copse on the 1836 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch map where it is annotated as ‘Rathcoon’ in gothic lettering on both. This is a raised circular and grass-covered area (diam. 61m N-S) that slopes down to the S (H 3.4m). It is defined by scarps (at N: Wth 7m; H 3.5m; at S: Wth 1; H 1.2m) with slight traces of a bank at the top of the scarp NNW-NNE and E-SE. There is an external berm (Wth c. 7-10m) that morphs into a slight fosse (Wth of base 2.5m; ext. D 0.4m) at NNE. The most probable entrance is a gap (Wth of top 3.4m; Wth of base 1.7m) at S, and there are mature beech trees on the perimeter.
