Catholic Church of Saint Peter and Saint PaulChurch/chapel · 1054 yd

Explorer Tom St Peter and Paul in Ballon is on a hill, which means it's always looking down on you while you climb. The reredos is from 1820, so it's been watching the same people for centuries. Linger, it's not going anywhere and neither should you.

Ballon Garda Síochána StationRic barracks · 1170 yd

Explorer Tom Ballon Garda Station has a corner tower that’s seen more crime than your average soap opera. Bring your own legend, I’ve run out, but this building definitely knows a thing or two about keeping watch.

Castlegrace MoatCastle, motte · 1.1 mi

Explorer Tom Castlegrace Moat is a big gravel mound sitting in a field, looking smug about it. It’s got a curse that only affects people who don’t wave first. Pretend you’re a lost aristocrat, nobody will check your ID.

Altamont Gardens MapVisitor information · 1.6 mi

Explorer Tom Altamont Gardens Map in County Carlow would bring its own compass to a party and still get lost. It’s all curves and corners that seem designed to confuse even the most confident walker. If it rains, blame me.

Scots Pine1.6 mi

Explorer Tom Scots Pine in County Carlow is holding a secret that would make sense if I had three more pints. It might be about a missing shoe or a bad date. Go on, count the windows and get it wrong like I did.

Altamont House and GardensHeritage attraction · 1.7 mi

Explorer Tom Altamont House and Gardens would teach history by pointing at a rock and saying 'That was the French invasion.' It’s all about natural chaos here, not tidy little rows of plants. Bring your worst joke, the place has heard worse.

Graveyard3.0 mi

Explorer Tom Graveyard in Ardristan is square-shaped and has a church right in the middle, like it's trying to hold everything together. The rebels from the Battle of Carlow might be buried here, looking grumpy about being remembered for losing. Bring a camera and your most suspicious face, they love that energy.

English holly3.0 mi

Explorer Tom English holly tree has sharp leaves that are definitely judging your outfit from up high. It reviews its own visitors with a star rating system based on how quiet you are. Take the long way round, it deserves the effort to avoid getting pricked.

Barragh Church (in ruins), GraveyardChurch · 3.7 mi

Explorer Tom Barragh Church, Graveyard in Barragh has remains that are long and narrow, like a loaf of bread left out in the rain. It’s got granite quoins, so it was fancy once, I suppose. A proper spot for a flask of tea and a big think.

ToberranananHoly well · 3.8 mi

Explorer Tom Toberrananan is two wells with drystone surrounds, and one had a tree planted over it. That tree was older than most of our problems. Visit, then text me what you think. I'll pretend to read it later.

Church (in ruins), GraveyardChurch · 4.0 mi

Explorer Tom Church, Graveyard in Templepeter is a simple rectangular structure made of large granite boulders that aren’t cored, so they’re just hanging out. It’s aligned East-West, which means it’s facing the right way for no reason. Toast it with a cup of tea and move on to the next.

Huntington Castle & GardensHeritage attraction · 5.7 mi

Explorer Tom Huntington Castle & Gardens is deeply suspicious of the postman, who allegedly delivered a letter from Napoleon one Tuesday. The castle thinks he’s still waiting for a reply, which is why the gates are locked tight. Bring a notebook and write the bit I made up.
