Toberrananan

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Two wells with drystone surrounds, about 20m apart. Well to S under roots of tree, now cut down. Tree rings indicate tree planted c. 140 years ago. The 1839 'OS 6-inch' map shows building, probably farm-yard, on site. Foundation courses of haggards visible. According to local information, site of monastery. O'Donovan records that 'patron' held here until 1798 but date unknown (OSL 1839, 119). (JKAS 1933, 245).

Toberrananan is associated with Saint Gobnait, a 6th-century Irish saint known for her patronage of bees and healing. The well was traditionally visited for cures related to eye ailments and general healing, with rituals often involving the collection of water at dawn.
