Barragh Church (in ruins), Graveyard — Report the wrong picture

Barragh Church stands in County Carlow as a long narrow ruin of random rubble and granite quoins, its western wall still rising five metres while the eastern gable has vanished entirely. A narrow round-headed opening with a wide internal splay hints at an early medieval date, beside which a detached granite font base waits outside the entrance. Eighteenth-century headstones cluster twenty metres north, suggesting the site continued serving the living long after the church itself broke apart.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 16 December 2009 Revised by: J. Farrelly Parish church of Barragh. Unenclosed remains of long narrow structure (25m x 4.8m) of random rubble with regular granite quoins, with relatively well-preserved W end (H of walls 5m) and poorly preserved S wall. E gable not identifiable. Gap indicates entrance in S wall towards W corner. Single narrow round-headed ope with wide internal splay and round rear arch suggests early medieval date. Base of granite font ouside entrance (JKAS 1933, 245). Upper stone of a rotary quern lies in the grass to N of church. Irregular graveyard (CW017-042002-) 20m to N of church with eighteenth-century headstones.
