Post box in Moone has retired into its own stone surround at Moone Abbey House. No work, an abbey address and a place built specially around it, I'd have put ‘post box’ down on the career form if they’d explained the pension.

This cast-iron post box, although no longer in use, is an important feature in the rural landscape and is prominently sited on the boundary wall of Moone Abbey House. The raised royal cipher (and manufacturer's signature) is of considerable artistic merit. Its age and survival, however, together with its associations with Ireland as formerly part of the British Empire are of great historical and social importance.
