Moat

Situated on a slight rise at the S side of the River Glyde not far N of Mapastown church (LH014-023001-) and consisting of an almost circular, flat-topped mound (diam. at base c. 22m; at summit c. 5.5m, H 4-6m) with traces of a possible crescentic bailey (c. 26m E-W) defined by slight scarping at the W and N. There are possible slight remains of a fosse between the mound and the possible bailey. At the SE side of the summit of the mound there are traces of a stone structure (LH014-022002-), possibly a later fortification built by a regiment in the army of William III under the command of Colonel Bellingham when he held Mapastown bridge.
