Megalithic tomb in Clooncree

On a low rise between Ballynakill Lough and Harbour. The monument consists of a small chamber (L c. 1.8m) covered by a roofstone. It is formed of two stones to N and a single stone to E. A small stone at W end does not appear to be in situ, and three other stones, probably outcropping rock, are exposed immediately SE of the chamber. Traces of a mound are visible around the structure. Though there is some doubt about the precise nature of the monument, it is clearly some form of burial chamber, (de Valera and Ó Nualláin 1972, xxiii, n.1) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Portal dolmen; Neolithic period. Its simple construction reflects early megalithic traditions in the region, though its isolated location suggests a possible local or community-specific use.
