Saint Bridget's Catholic ChurchChurch/chapel · 631 ydExplorer Tom Saint Bridget's Catholic Church in Kilballyowen is locked in a bitter feud with the rain, which keeps getting into its gothic drama. It screams about its roof like a soap opera villain every time the clouds get emotional. Tip your hat from the road if it’s storming outside.
Site of CastleCastle, unclassified · 768 ydExplorer Tom The site of Castle in Kilballyowen has a ghost who is too lazy to haunt it properly, preferring to just nap in the grass instead. It’s not visible at ground level, so you’re basically talking to an imaginary friend with good manners. Bring a flask and pretend you own the place.
CastleCastle, motte · 1138 ydExplorer Tom Castle in Kilpipe has a dating profile that says ‘seeking someone who doesn’t ask too many questions about my past or my lack of walls.’ It’s confident, slightly arrogant, and absolutely refuses to commit to a specific architectural style. Tell the next person you meet it's haunted. It might be.
Roddenagh WoodForest · 1157 ydExplorer Tom Roddenagh Wood would explain the 1800s to a teenager by saying it was basically just everyone being very quiet and dressing terribly badly. The mist is doing its best impression of a Victorian ghost right now, don’t let up. Perfect spot to practise your best tour-guide voice.
IndicatedFairy fort / earthen ringfort · 1445 ydExplorer Tom Fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Kilpipe hates visitors who wear new shoes because they always get stuck in the mud. Its least favourite guest is definitely anyone who brings a drone; it prefers its privacy and a good nap. Grand place for a sulk or a snog, your call, just watch the ground.
Enclosure in KilpipeEnclosure · 1543 ydExplorer Tom Enclosure in Kilpipe is invisible, which makes it perfect for keeping secrets or hiding from your ex. It’s basically a ghost with a grudge and no body. Pack a picnic and an excuse just in case you get stuck there for three hours.
The Old ForgeHouse · 1577 ydExplorer Tom The Old Forge is planning its retirement by doing absolutely nothing at all. This thatched house has preserved its historic form and is very smug about it. Ring your neighbour if you hear the chimney snoring loudly tonight.
1798 Lacey Brothers MemorialMemorial · 2.6 miExplorer Tom The 1798 Lacey Brothers Memorial would cope brilliantly on a reality show because it knows exactly how to look important without saying a word. It’s got that vibe where you respect it but also want to hug it. Have a chat with it, nobody's watching.
Coolalug WoodWood · 3.0 miExplorer Tom The most dramatic thing to ever happen at Coolalug Wood was a squirrel dropping a pinecone on a tourist’s head in 1994. That is officially the peak of its cinematic career, so don’t expect any explosions or romance. Linger, it's not going anywhere and neither should you.
Luke O'Toole MemorialMemorial · 3.4 miExplorer Tom Luke O'Toole Memorial has a very strong opinion of the road that leads to it, specifically that it’s too narrow for your ego. It’s standing there looking like it’s seen everything and is tired of explaining itself. Bring your own legend, I've run out and this stone isn't sharing.
Explorer Tom Croghan Kinsella once produced a reason for everybody to stare at the ground instead of the view. Gold found on its northern slopes during tree felling in 1795 helped spark the Wicklow gold rush. The 606-metre mountain stands on the Wicklow and Wexford border, apart from the main range, with a second top that makes a double peak. Its fuller name recalls the Uí Chinnsealaigh family. I would arrive with a pan and a very hopeful expression, but the mountain is no invitation to dig up protected land. Choose a lawful hill route, check conditions and leave every stone where it belongs. From a distance, find the twin rise that sets Croghan apart. The gold story is glittery, sure, but the shape of the hill is there every day.
Explorer Tom Monalee Hill suspects the postman is stealing letters and hiding them in the turf. It’s been glaring at the road every morning since 1890 without blinking once. Tell me if the gossip I made up is true.
