Man-made underground passage in Ballinreeshig

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Hodder Westropp broke the ground at Ballinreeshig, revealing a hidden passage inside the ringfort. O'Leary recorded the discovery in 1918, but the earth swallowed the entrance again. The passage remains vanished, leaving only memory and the faint suggestion that the ground still holds what human hands shaped.
In ringfort (CO086-026---). O'Leary (1918, 119) records a Man-made underground passage here 'which was opened by Hodder Westropp'. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
