Lady Well

Marked on the 1939 'OS 6-inch' map as 'Lady Well'. An irregular pool (L 1.75m; Wth 1m), partly surrounded by 3 large stones and dressed block. A statue of Our Lady was erected c. 1947. A Rosary is recited at the well on 15th August (ASI field notes). In 1934 the sides of the well were walled in and steps down to it were put in place (IFC Schools MSS 659, 170-1). Various references to traditions and legends are mentioned in the IFC Schools MSS (vol. 658-9), including one which noted that the waters rise on Lady's Day (IFC Schools MSS 659, 171-2) and another that the water can cure sore hands and eyes (IFC Schools MSS 658, 277-8). The Lady Well at Templetown is associated with veneration of the Virgin Mary, as indicated by the 1947 statue of Our Lady and the tradition of reciting the Rosary. Such wells often became sites of pilgrimage and devotion, particularly in rural Catholic communities, where they were believed to offer spiritual or physical healing.
