The Irish Wake Museum takes a subject many visitors might approach cautiously and opens it with stories, objects and honest questions. In Waterford's former fifteenth-century almshouse, its guided tour explores how people faced death, cared for neighbours and marked a life. Tom has promised to keep his jokes respectful here; the building has heard far better storytellers than either of us. The museum traces beliefs and funeral customs from early Christian times into the twentieth century. A processional cross associated with fifteenth-century practice connects public ritual to surviving metalwork. An extraordinary miniature coffin bears an 1844 inscription for a man called Jack Maher, whose ashes apparently returned from America. It is a small object with a big journey behind it, and a sharper reminder of family ties than any grand monument. The building itself is part of the account. Once an almshouse, it carries six centuries of Waterford history through rooms that bring visitors close to the material. The operator's guided experience takes about fifty minutes, with a guide to explain the customs rather than leaving unfamiliar objects to speak alone. The subject includes illness, injury and lifelike images of the dead, so choose the visit thoughtfully for your companions. Current tours run on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, with a break between 1pm and 2pm; check the booking page for the day's places. The operator recommends the experience for ages eight and over. Three floors are reached by stairs, so the building cannot currently accommodate visitors who use wheelchairs or mobility aids. Come ready to listen, and leave with a fuller idea of why a wake was about the living as well as the dead.
