Test trenching in June 2014 in advance of a proposed graveyard extension to the NW of Killuran church and graveyard (CL036-024001- and CL036-024002-) (licence no. 14E0149) revealed a series of ditches and pits within the proposed development area. The testing results, coupled with earlier geophysical survey and desk-based assessment indicated that a double-ditched enclosure (internal diam. c. 80m), probably early medieval in date, surrounds the location of the original church. The ditches had steep profiles, 0.9m in depth and 2.1-2.7m in width. Smaller gullies and a number of pits and post-holes were found within the enclosure. A bullaun stone (CL036-024003-) lies within the graveyard. (Taylor and Hull 2014) Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 9 July 2014

Bullaun stone in KilluranBullaun stone · 19 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Bullaun stone in Killuran has a ghost that’s too lazy to haunt it properly, preferring to nap in the hollow instead. The place is quiet enough to hear your own thoughts, or just the wind complaining. Bring a flask of something warm and a story to swap.

Grave YardGraveyard · 19 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Graveyard in Killuran has very strong opinions on modern buildings and hates them all with a passion that could power a small town. It’s just trying to keep its dignity intact in a world of ugly concrete. If it's closed, admire it from the road like a polite stalker.

Derrymore HouseCountry house · 1.7 mi

Explorer Tom The other Derrymore House was a servant's wing before becoming a country house, so it knows its place. Count the crows on the roof, then count again, because they’re definitely judging your math.

Deerpark WoodForest · 2.0 mi

Explorer Tom Deerpark Wood in County Clare sounds like a place where woodland cabins and treehouses might just be a dream away.

KnocklaurMountain / peak · 2.0 miComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Knocklaur, a mountain that’s as wild as the winds that sweep through County Clare.

Ballynahinch Castle (in Ruins)Castle, unclassified · 2.3 mi

Explorer Tom Ballynahinch Castle was built by Donald MacNamara when the water levels were higher. Have a look and decide if I was lying, but remember, he only got there by boat back then.

Violet Hill Loop WalkWalking route · 2.4 miComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Violet Hill Loop Walk sounds like a rave gone wrong in the hills. There's no record of access, which means bring your own rope and a sense of adventure.

Kilnoe HillMountain / peak · 2.4 miComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Kilnoe Hill is a quiet sentinel in the landscape, its summit crowned with the silence of ancient times and the stillness of the Clare countryside.

Hurdlestown HouseHouse · 3.0 mi

Explorer Tom Hurdlestown House is dated 1871 but looks like it tried to be a castle and lost the budget halfway through. It’s got crenellated bits that are purely for show, I bet you that. Look for the ghost, then pretend you didn't, because he might be shy and wearing a tutu.

Children's playground4.8 miComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom The second Children's playground in County Clare is a mystery, unknown access but full of potential for playful discovery and endless fun.

Kilkishen Castle (in Ruins)Castle, tower house · 5.9 mi

Explorer Tom Kilkishen Castle would order a massive portion of chips with extra vinegar if it could talk. It’s sitting in the demesne looking like it wants to hide from the tourists. Best enjoyed with a bag of chips and no plans.
