Hydropathic Establishment

Overlooking Shournagh river to E; extensive remains, covering area c. 200m square with overgrown gardens. On site of St. Ann's Hill indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map as country house. Consists largely of ruined one- and two-storey buildings of late 19th century appearance with plaster detail, many roofless and partially overgrown. One notable feature is tall wooden belfry, with ornate details, at SE corner of complex. Some of the wooden changing cubicles survive in former Turkish Baths. On N side of complex is 2-storey structure once used as isolation unit, now in residential use. Founded in 1843 by Dr Barter but greatly enlarged and refurbished in 1870s; at its peak 1870-1910 (Joe O'Leary, public lecture to Cork Historical and Archaeological Society 16/2/1993).
