Gubben Cottage

Detached double-pile three-bay two-storey house with porch, built c.1900, with recent lean-to extensions to rear (south) and recent conservatory (west). Hipped slate roofs with rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered walls with plinth. Square-headed openings with two-over-two timber sliding sash windows and stone sills. Square-headed openings to porch with bipartite two-over-two timber sliding sash windows and concrete sills. Square-headed door opening to porch with replacement timber panelled door and concrete step. Enclosed by rubble stone walls with cast-iron railings.

Retaining much of its original character and charm, this early twentieth century house is representative of the style of architecture employed for more formal dwellings throughout the nineteenth and into the early twentieth century. The hipped roof, centrally placed chimneystacks and regular openings mark a departure from the vernacular tradition and a move towards a downsized version of the big house.
