Sea Fort

Detached T-plan five-bay two-storey former country house, built c.1760, now in use as private house. Flanking blocks to north and west and recent lean-to extension to south-east. Pitched slate and artificial slate roofs having rendered chimneystacks with cast-iron and uPVC rainwater goods. Painted rendered walls with slate hanging to rear (south-east). Square-headed openings with one-over-one timber sliding sash windows with stone and concrete sills. Venetian window with timber sliding sash window and flanking timber side lights over central door. Square-headed openings to rear with two-over-two timber sliding sash and replacement casement windows with stone and concrete sills. Round-headed door opening having timber battened door, tripartite fanlight, limestone step and moulded render surround. Square-headed openings to rear having replacement timber battened door. Single-bay two-story flanking blocks comprising hipped slate roofs, painted rendered walls, square-headed openings with two-over-two timber sliding sash windows with stone and concrete sills and square-headed door openings with replacement timber battened doors. Three-bay two-storey outbuildings to south-east and east comprising pitched slate roofs, rubble stone walls and square-headed openings with timber battened shuttering and doors. Enclosed by rubble stone walls.

A fine late eighteenth middle-sized house of balanced proportions, retaining much of its original character and charm. It is an unusual addition to the local architectural heritage, as most historic buildings in West Cork date to the nineteenth century. Set overlooking a tidal channel, its original owners were probably associated with a maritime actively, possibly shipping, which provided the required wealth and necessity to build this imposing house in such a remote location.
