Great Grove

Detached three-bay (two-bay deep) two-storey farmhouse, extant 1885, on a square plan. Occupied, 1901; 1911. Renovated, ----, with replacement single-bay single-storey projecting glazed porch added to centre ground floor. Hipped slate roof on a U-shaped plan with clay ridge tiles, paired red brick Running bond central chimney stacks on red brick Running bond bases having stringcourses below corbelled stepped capping supporting terracotta pots, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on exposed timber rafters retaining cast-iron downpipes. Roughcast walls on rendered chamfered plinth. Square-headed central door opening into farmhouse with concealed dressings framing glazed timber panelled double doors having sidelights on panelled risers below overlight. Camber-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing one-over-one timber sash windows. Set in landscaped grounds with roughcast piers to perimeter having shallow pyramidal capping supporting wrought iron double gates.

A farmhouse representing an integral component of the late nineteenth-century domestic built heritage of Hollyfort with the architectural value of the composition, one recalling Avenue House (1906) in Gorey (see 15601075), suggested by such attributes as the compact square plan form centred on a restrained doorcase; and the slight diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a graduated tiered visual effect with the principal "apartments" defined by polygonal bay windows. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior, thus upholding the character or integrity of the composition. Furthermore, adjacent outbuildings (extant 1839) continue to contribute positively to the group and setting values of a self-contained ensemble having historic connections with the Webster family including Thomas Webster (d. 1934), 'Farmer' (NA 1901; NA 1911).
