On a N-S ridge between the Dinin river valley to the W, Douglas river valley to the S, and a small valley to the E. The graveyard (dims. 25m N-S; 45m E-W) occupies one of the irregular humps at the S end of the ridge and has a commanding view across all three valleys. A medieval church (KK010-069001-) is centrally placed within a roughly rectangular graveyard. The graveyard is enclosed by a stone wall with an entrance gate at the E end of the N wall. The ground within the graveyard and church has been significantly raised as a result of successive burials over a long period. At the eastern end of the graveyard, approximately 5m in from the N and E wall the ground level within the graveyard rises by c. 2m and is revetted by a stone wall, now in various states of collapse. Upstanding headstones, occupying both the ruined church and the graveyard, date to the 18th and 19th centuries. Given the close proximity to a church and graveyard seven trenches were opened in 2004 in advance of house building, however, no archaeological remains were found.

Enclosure in MuckaleeEnclosure · 478 yd

Explorer Tom If this enclosure were a person at a wedding, it would be the uncle who talks too much. It’s got a stream running around it like a very wet belt. Hum something sad nearby, it adds atmosphere.

Edward BurkeMemorial · 1666 yd

Explorer Tom Edward Burke in County Kilkenny has a retirement plan that involves turning into moss and becoming a very quiet, green celebrity. It is a memorial with no first name or last name details beyond the obvious, so just call him Ed for short. Stand back, squint, and it looks like a castle.

Galvin'sForest · 1.2 mi

Explorer Tom Galvin's Wood hates the wind because it keeps messing up its carefully arranged leaf decorations every single morning. It’s basically having a full-on tantrum with every gust that comes through the canopy. Stop the car, it's worth the hazard lights.

Rockbrook Corn MillMill (water) · 1.3 mi

Explorer Tom The Rockbrook Corn Mill had a matchmaker working there who paired off the flour sacks with the water wheels. It’s ruined now, but the windows still look like they’re judging you. Perfect place to be dramatic and pretend you know history.

The CaveHouse · 1.3 mi

Explorer Tom The Cave in Corbetstown was once ruled by a goat who demanded pebble decor for the porch. It’s long, low, and has better style than most modern flats you’re paying rent on. Ten minutes here and you'll have hay in your hair.

Site of Kilmadum ChurchChurch · 1.4 mi

Explorer Tom Site of Kilmadum Church was nearly sold for a horse in 1920, but the farmer backed out last minute. Now it’s just footings and grass, which is honestly a pretty good trade for the trouble. Wave at the cows, they're the real locals.

CastleCastle, tower house · 1.5 mi

Explorer Tom Castle in Corbetstown is getting picked on by the wind again. It’s just a tower house that can’t hold a grudge or its roof. Walter Archer Fitz John Irish was here, but now it’s all moaning stones. Mind the nettles, they're the real guards here.

Clogharinka Castle (in ruins)Castle, unclassified · 1.7 mi

Explorer Tom Clogharinka Castle in Clogharinka had a bishop refuse to visit because he said the view was too noisy. The river bends right next door, so you get the best seat in the house. Bring sandwiches, the gulls will thank you.

Cave of DunmoreCave · 1.8 mi

Explorer Tom Cave of Dunmore has an escape plan that involves crawling through a hole so small only a very determined badger could fit through it, which is honestly a bit desperate for a cave to be planning on. It’s just waiting for the right moment to bolt. Ideal place to rehearse an excuse for being late.

Dunmore CavesCave · 1.8 mi

Explorer Tom Dunmore Cave is short enough on a map for me to boast I could cross it in a hurry, then deep enough to prove me wrong. Its passages total about a quarter mile and descend roughly 46 metres below Kilkenny ground. Inside stands the Market Cross, a limestone column more than 5.8 metres high. The cave is also an important archaeological site, with records of violence in the tenth century; the people involved deserve a sober account from the guides, not a joke from me. Protected as a national monument since 1944, it began welcoming guided visitors in the 1960s. Check today's opening, tour and step access before coming, and stay on the visitor route. Look at the formations without touching them, however tempting the shapes. Stone has been working here for ages and needs no help from my fingers.

Mohil GraveyardArchaeological place · 2.1 mi

Explorer Tom Mohil Graveyard wants its tombstone to read 'Died of boredom' because there are so many stones here already. It’s a bit crowded for a quiet nap, if you ask me, with all those ancestors gossiping. Pick a stone, any stone, and invent its biography on the spot.

Sycamore2.3 mi

Explorer Tom Sycamore in Kilkenny is guarding a legend about a giant who got stuck in its branches. It’s just a big tree with a dramatic backstory. Find the wonkiest bit and send it to your group chat.
