Gallán

Standing stone

What is recorded here

Gallán is a subrectangular standing stone in County Cork, Ireland, rising 1.95 metres within a field fence on an NE-facing slope. It resisted capture on both the 1842 and 1903 OS 6-inch maps, remaining hidden from official record despite its clear presence in the pasture. The stone may have marked a boundary, a burial, or a promise made under open sky, yet no human name remains attached to it. Its continued invisibility to surveyors suggests it belongs more to memory than to measurement.
Not shown on 1842 and 1903 OS 6-inch maps. In pasture, on NE-facing slope. Stone (H 1.95m; 0.56m x 0.5m) is subrectangular in plan, standing in WSW field fence. Long axis NE-SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
