Half moon, whole life. The lake completed the circle, gave back light at dusk, and withdrew at dawn to reveal the bank and ditch. People may have stood at the open edge, watching water leave or return, while the small hut kept its own warmth beside the larger chamber. The fort did not need a gate when the sea of Cavan could close the ring whenever it chose.

Lakeside rath on a promontory jutting into Lough Gowna. Semicircular raised area (int. dims. c. 40m NNW-SSE; 28m NE-SW) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a partially infilled, deep and wide, waterlogged fosse. The open E side faces the lake and a modern field boundary now extends across it. A small circular area enclosed by a substantial earthen bank, representing a hut site, occurs in the SSW of the interior of the rath. Original entrance not recognisable. A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Portanure, situated on a lakeside promontory jutting into Lough Gowna, is a likely early-medieval defensive or habitation site characterized by a semicircular raised area enclosed by an earthen bank and a waterlogged fosse. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy lore, and they were often considered places of supernatural significance in Irish folklore.
