Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Monaneague

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts hide identity behind myth, but this is an earthen ringfort in Monaneague, County Cork. Power recorded a demolished lios with man-made underground passages before the site disappeared from local memory. The exact location is no longer known, yet the description preserves what the land once held: a built space, altered or lost, whose underground reach still echoes in the account.
Power (1923, 179) records site of 'demolished lios which had Man-made underground passages' (CO064-131---) in this townland. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
