Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Higginstown (farbill By.) is a fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Higginstown (farbill By.), County Westmeath, Ireland. The 1913 map depicts a roughly oval-shaped earthwork measuring approximately 47 metres wide from west-northwest to east-southeast and 36 metres long from north-northeast to south-southwest. A 1970-2 description identifies a subcircular area enclosed by a bank and external fosse, noting that the bank has several small gaps and a large portion of the northeast perimeter was quarried away. Very slight remains of a fosse are visible from northwest through north to north-northeast, while a gap at the southeast with a top width of 4.7 metres and a basal width of 1.8 metres may mark the original entrance.
Situated in low-lying pasture, overlooked by higher ground and with restricted views of the surrounding landscape. Townland boundary with Killucan immediately to S. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly oval-shaped earthwork (approx. dims. 47m WNW-ESE; 36m NNE-SSW). Monument described in 1970-2 as a subcircular-shaped area enclosed by a bank and external fosse. The bank has several small gaps and a large portion of the perimeter has been quarried away at NE. There are very slight remains of a fosse from NW-N-NNE. The original entrance is not clear but may have been at SE where there is a gap (Wth at top 4.7m; basal Wth 1.8m). The interior has a gentle NE-facing slope and there are quarry holes evident with residual spoil heaps. A field boundary flanks the monument from SSE-S-SSW. Monument is visible as a tree-planted earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. Date of upload: 08 July 2019
