Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Hartley

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons and others may have built the Fort, but the Fort belongs to everyone and has no owner. It is a circular grass place on a low hill, marked by an earthen bank and a band of rushes. The entry has gone or never been seen, which fits a fortress that refuses to be entered on human terms.
Located on top of a low drumlin. This is a grass-covered circular area (int. diam. 26.5m N-S; 25.5m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.3m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.4m generally to 1.75m at SW) and a fosse represented by an external band of rushes (Wth 2-3m). The original entrance is not identified. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
