Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Corraneary (tullyhunco By.)

Fairy forts are human places misnamed because people stopped understanding them. This is a true ringfort: a raised circular area nearly forty metres across, enclosed by two earthen banks with a wide deep waterlogged ditch between them. The inner bank is much stronger than the outer, and the original entrance faces south-south-east through matching breaks in the banks. Someone later narrowed the outer gap, perhaps to keep out rain, livestock or unwanted visitors. The ditch would have made entry difficult in winter, when mud and water turned a small fort into a serious obstacle. Inside, the land is raised and dry enough for living, while the margin stays hostile. That is the shape of the place: a small defensible world set inside a wet ring, built to be entered deliberately and remembered for centuries after its makers left it alone.
