Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolyhenan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Marianne and the fairies were never seen again. The oval scarped edge and regular external fosse still mark the boundary where human memory fades and fairy mystery begins. Dense scrub now chokes the earthworks in Coolyhenan, but the shape remains clear enough to warn that forgetting is not the same as losing.
Situated in flat pasture. The monument, depicted on the 1924 OS 6-inch map as an oval area (c. 25m E-W; 20m N-S) defined by a scarp, is now heavily masked by dense scrub vegetation. It is evident as a roughly oval area (23m E-W) defined by a scarped edge with an external fosse. The scarp (Wth. 2.1m; H 1.1m) has been eroded by scrub vegetation. The fosse (Wth. 2.4m; D 0.4m) is u-shaped and regular throughout its circuit. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 27 March 2013
