Two earthen rings and a hidden tunnel mark the Ballyonan fort, where ordinary people may have lived beside the fairy road. The wide berm between the banks gives the place a busy, inhabited feeling, as if human and fairy traffic still cross it at dusk.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Sub-circular area (max. dims. 30.5m E-W, 27.5m N-S) enclosed by two widely spaced banks with intervening and external fosses. Inner bank (Wth 3m, H 0.7m internally, 0.3m externally). Berm (Wth c. 13.5m) between inner fosse and outer bank. Outer bank (Wth 4m, H 1m internally, 0.8m externally). External fosse (Wth 5.5m, D 0.6m). Possible Man-made underground passage (LH005-016002-) visible as a T-shaped depression in berm at NE. Two possible hut sites (LH005-016003- and LH005-016004-), one in berm at SW (diam. c. 6m), second abutting inner bank at S.
