Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballyglissane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible wall remains, but the 1842 survey marked a sub-circular enclosure forty metres wide in level pasture. House foundations now sink into that forgotten shape, embedding human life inside the old boundary rather than beside it. The earth swallowed the fort, yet the fort still occupies the land beneath every step.
In level pasture. Shown as sub-circular enclosure on 1842 OS 6-inch map (c. 40m N-S; c. 45m E-W). No visible surface trace. House foundations sunk in area of site. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
