Hearth in Curraghprevin

A small hearth was discovered as a result of archaeological testing carried out in advance of construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. This hearth (0.6m x 1.6m; D 0.26m) was oval in shape with gradually sloping sides and an uneven base. It contained loose mid-brown/black silty clay with small angular stones with very occasional flecks of charcoal. No finds were recovered from the fill. According to the excavator (O'Neill pers. comm.), this hearth is similar to and may have been related to another hearth excavated at the Neolithic habitation site (CO044-083----), c. 500m away in the same townland.
