Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinwillin (barrymore By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Ballinwillin, County Cork. A ringfort, perhaps older than memory, built on a west-facing slope. The road cut through it, not knowing what it killed. Forty metres of human life erased in a single stroke. The land forgot. People forgot. Forgetting is not the same as peace. It is a wound that stops bleeding.
On W-facing slope. Shown on all three eds of OS 6-inch map as semicircular area (diam. c. 40m) with W half removed by N-S road. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
