What is recorded here

Within area of active gravel quarry, surrounding land in undulating pasture. No visible trace, it would appear that most, if not all, of this monument has been quarried, though a portion of the E quadrant may survive. Depicted as oval area defined by one or two enclosing elements on 1840-41 OS 6-inch map and as an oval enclosure (dims. c. 32m N-S; c. 28m E-W) defined by a scarp on the latest edition. A possible external fosse is also depicted E-S-SW by a second row of hachures on the latest edition. According to the OS Letters (c. 1840) 'a considerably large fort lies to the northwest [of the church TS-67-011004-]…The parapet is partly visible still on the south side' (O'Flanagan 1930, vol.2, 121). Flynn (1913, 11) describes the monument and its setting on 'the extremity of a low spur to the east [of TS067-011001-] a strong little earthen fort has been constructed. The sides are very sharply scarped away and fosses and ramparts made where the fort touches the adjoining hills. There are traces of a garth to the rear of the hill-side from this fort. This earthwork is strong only towards the east, however. It is completely overlooked by the other two, and would be quite untenable if they were held by a hostile force', a plan and section is also included (ibid., 12, No.3). Monument clearly visible on aerial photograph taken in 1966 (CUCAP 13 July 1966, APA 14) but had been badly damaged by quarrying by 1974 (GSI 16.4.1974, R. 516/515). Enclosure (TS067-011001-) c. 100m to W, motte and bailey (TS067-011003-) c. 100m to S and church (TS067-011004-) and graveyard (TS067-011006-) c. 30m and c. 60m to E respectively.
