Enclosure in Aghavoneen

Situated on a rise, in rough pasture, with good views of the surrounding landscape. Possible ringwork (WM036-005----) lies c. 22m to WSW and appears to be physically connected to the monument via a short, low ridge. Annotated 'Fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a circular-shaped earthwork. Shown on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly triangular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1973 as a raised subtriangular-shaped area (approx. dims. 38m NE-SW; 30m NW-SE) defined by a low earthen bank along a short edge to S with a return along a longer edge to SW and NW. There is a low bank at the foot of the rise which encloses the monument from ENE-E-ESE. The ground slopes away sharply to W, N and E of the monument. There is no indication of an external fosse. The interior of the earthwork is quite uneven and is strewn with stones. Monument is visible today as a roughly oval-shaped tree-covered earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. Could be the remains of two ringforts (WM036-005----) as depicted on the first ed. OS 6-inch map or the remains of a ringwork with detached bailey.
