The site is dedicated to St. Illan, a Celtic saint venerated on February 13, and was originally known as Diseart Iollathan, meaning St. Illan's Hermitage. Its significance lies in its early Christian association, likely dating to the medieval period, though specific builders and exact dates remain unrecorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
