Ecclesiastical enclosure in Kilcanavee

Ecclesiastical enclosure

What is recorded here

Situated on a SE-facing, lower slope of Croughaun Hill. An enclosure, described as enclosing about 2 acres and defined by an earthen rampart (diam. c. 30m), was associated with a church (Power 1952, 408). It is no longer visible, but the location is known locally where the soil is darker when the area is ploughed. A chamfered jambstone from a doorway (WA015-062----) is built into the outer face of the adjacent road wall. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 02 November 2010
