Dermod O'Hurley was born in Emly, County Tipperary, about 1530. He became Archbishop of Cashel, was tortured in Dublin, and hanged outside the city in 1584. Queen Elizabeth I's government treated him as a conspiracy danger, and his martyrdom remains central to the story of Cashel.
