Crossroads School

Detached four-bay single-storey over semi-basement former school, built c. 1900, with external stair to projecting gable-fronted porch to south elevation, now in use as a church hall. Pitched slate roof, with cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast render over random rubble stone walls. Square-headed window openings with red brick flat arches over with block-and-start red brick reveals, hidden beneath roughcast render, with timber six-over-six horned timber sash windows, concrete sills. Square-headed door opening, with replacement timber door. Set adjacent to Crossroads Presbyterian church (see 40905509).

A good example of a small early twentieth century rural parish school, unusual in that it has a semi-basement which was formerly a thatched byre. It retains most of its original form and detail, including some original windows with red brick flat arches and surrounds that are largely hidden beneath roughcast. It continues to offer a social focus as a church hall for members of the surrounding community.
