Cross-slab in Kilbride (talbotstown Lower By.)

Cross-slab

What is recorded here

According to Healy (2009, 107) this slab was originally located in a graveyard (WI001-022003-), but was presented to the NMI in 1970 (Reg. No. 1970:189). A small, rectangular, granite fragment (dims L 0.42m; Wth 0.25m; T 0.145m) bears a narrow, shallow groove terminating at a larger, rectangular, recessed panel. Dateable to the early Christian period, this cross-slab likely served a funerary or commemorative function, typical of medieval Christian grave markers in Ireland. Its relocation from a graveyard suggests it may have been associated with a local church or monastic site, though specific folklore or dedications are not recorded.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
