Colthurst Bridge

Five-arch road bridge, built 1880, over River Blackwater. Snecked rock-faced limestone walls and parapets with limestone copings, tooled limestone string courses over arches. Segmental arches with tooled limestone voussoirs and V-cutwaters with rock-faced course at impost level of arches. Limestone plaque to parapet in form of shield.

This wide bridge is a well-executed example and forms part of a group of multiple-arch bridges over the River Blackwater. The masonry treatments add textural interest and were clearly executed by skilled craftsmen. The bridge is a historical landmark for the local community. It was bombed by the Black and Tans in the early twentieth century but was later repaired.
