Claremont House

Main entrance gates serving Claremount House (15402664), erected c.1880, comprising a pair of ashlar limestone gate piers (on square-plan) with shallow pyramidal capping stones over, supporting a pair of wrought-iron gates. Gateway flanked to the north and south by sections of ashlar limestone plinth walling having wrought-iron railings over (on quadrant plan). Further sections of rubble limestone screen walling (on quadrant plan) to the north and south, with ashlar limestone coping over, terminated to either side by ashlar limestone gate piers (on square-plan) with shallow pyramidal capping over. Located to the west of Claremount House (15402664) and to the southeast of Mullingar. Series of eighteen wrought-iron gates line approach avenue to the main house, supported by gate piers of various styles and construction.

A highly appealing and impressive entrance gateway serving Claremount House (15402664). It is constructed using good quality stonework while the appealing wrought-iron gates and railings further embellish the aesthetics of this fine composition. The interesting and unusually fine series of wrought-iron lattice-work field gates lining the approach avenue further enhances the setting and may represent the work of a skilled local ironmonger operating in the area at the time. This composition forms part of an interesting group of structures associated with Claremount House and is an appealing feature in the rural landscape to the southeast of Mullingar, adding attractive incident to the roadscape.
