Church in Monasootagh

Church

What is recorded here

According to the Civil Survey (1654-6) a church was on the Monasootagh property of Lord Mountnoriss in 1641 (Simington 1953, 271). It was somewhere on an extensive estate including Monasootagh, Ballyduff, Raheen, Carriglegan, Coolnaleen and Kilcloran townlands as well as the townland of Cnocangarrow, which later became Camolin and Camolin Park (Loeber and Stouthamer-Loeber 1987, 194). The church may have been in the Camolin townlands, which became the centre of the estate, or be the parish church of Kilcomb (WX010-010001-) in Ballyduff, although an index to the Survey suggest it was in Monasootagh (Simington 1953, 292). It remains unlocated. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 11 April, 2012 Amended: 13 May, 2014
The church at Monasootagh was likely built in the early 17th century on the estate of Lord Mountnorris, reflecting the Anglican presence in the area during that period. Its significance lies in its mention in the Civil Survey, indicating it was a recognized place of worship before the 1641 rebellion.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
