According to Power (1952, 388) there was a place called Gort na Cille in Killowen close to the road, that was the site of an early church. It remains unlocated, but it may be the church that was impropriate to St. Catherine's Abbey in Waterford city (WA009-005029-) in 1540 (White 1943, 343).
