Church in Freemount

Bowman (1934, 626) recorded grass-covered mounds in ringfort (12488) as the remains of a church; 'Cillin Chronain - Saint Cronan's little church...in the sub-division of Cnoc a theampaill and is responsible for the parish name' (Knocktemple). No visible surface trace of mounds or church. Church in Knocktemple was in ruins in 1615 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 297). The church in Freemount is believed to be a small medieval structure, possibly dedicated to Saint Cronan, associated with a ringfort and likely built between the 7th and 10th centuries. Its remains, recorded by Bowman in 1934, suggest a rural Christian settlement with local historical and archaeological significance.
