Cave

Located in a rath (SL019-018001-). This Man-made underground passage is not shown on the 1837 OS 6-inch map; on the 1913 edition it is indicated as ‘Cave’. A low, grass-grown subcircular rise (diam. 6-8m; H 0.3-0.4m) at the W end of the rath interior marks the location. There are two surface openings 6m apart, one at the NE and one at the SW end of the rise. There reveal the Man-made underground passage to be of drystone construction. The NE opening (c. 0.6m NE−SW; c. 0.5m NW−SE; D c. 0.5m) reveals an in situ lintel above a passage, largely infilled with earth, which appears to extend to SW. In the opening (c. 0.8m NW−SE; c. 0.8m NE−SW) at the SW end of the rise, drystone walling and a probably in situ lintel can be glimpsed, and a partly infilled or collapsed passage appears to extend to N or NW.
