Castlering Bridge in Castlering, Chanonrock, meets the Fane with four arches and pointed stone dividers on both sides. Four queues for water, and precautions against it coming back: somebody built the bridge with the deep mistrust of a man who has organised a parish raffle.
Four-arch rubble masonry road bridge with round-arched openings and having V-cutwaters to both east and west elevations, built c. 1810. Parapet rebuilt and repaired in concrete c. 1970 and concrete bases to cutwaters with concrete render added to arch soffits. Uncoursed limestone rubble masonry with rubble stone voussoirs to arches. Bridge carries road over broad stretch of Fane River, in rural setting.
This simple bridge forms an attractive roadside feature. Its finely constructed and balanced arched openings and tall cutwaters create a very harmonious whole which conforms well to its rural setting. The structure is also of technical interest for the skill involved in its design and construction.
