Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Derreeny still hides the castle named in a 17th-century grant, though no wall or trench has been found to show where it stood. That absence makes the place more alive, because the name preserves a building that people once used, feared, loved or forgot.
A 17th-century grant mentions 'the Castle … of Dirrenyvaldene', which Healy (1988, 179) identifies as the townland of Derreeny. The exact location of this castle is not known. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
