Castle

Situated on the S side of the group of monuments at Clonmines, and c. 60m from the W bank of the N-S Owenduff/Corrock river. It is also on W side of a rectangular walled enclosure (dims. 50m N-S; 35-45m E-W) perhaps a walled garden or bawn. The castle was occupied by the Sutton family down to 1849 (Hore 1901-11, vol. 2, 215-16) and it is still occupied as part of a modern farmhouse. It is a rectangular tower (ext. dims c. 6.5m E-W; 6.35m N-S) with a base-batter surviving to the second floor (H 8m) but altered as a modern dwelling. The ground floor has an arched embrasure in the N, E and S walls, but there is no barrel-vault.
