Black Castle

Half-hidden in reeds where two rivers braid, Black Castle still stands five storeys tall on the Wexford flood plain. Its thick walls hide a winding stair, narrow defence slits, small chambers and even a medieval toilet whose waste fell away through a hidden chute. The castle may have belonged to the FitzHenry family, though no certain record says so. What is certain is that people lived inside this strange stone tower, climbed its stair, looked out over water and left behind a building still sharp enough to imagine them in.
