Burnt spread in Port

Burnt spread

What is recorded here

In 2018, Archaeological test excavations (Excavation Licence No. 18E0591) in advance of a proposed mixed development at Port Townland, Leitrim Village revealed a deposit of blackened peaty clay; a possible charcoal-enriched soil with occasional burnt stone within the matrix of black soil. The material was uncovered 0.2m below the ground surface in a 1m wide test- trench. While not extensive, it was interpreted by the excavator as representing a possible burnt spread in the vicinity. Consequently, proposed works at this location were to be relocated to avoid any potential disturbance to this material.
