Burial ground in Rathtoe

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Rathtoe: Shallow trench, female 21 to 40 years, other skeletons unreported during building. A burial ground hidden under a new house, remembered only because a cable cut through it.
Discovered when digging a trench to lay an electrical cable to the front of a dwelling in 2001 (Excavation Licence 02E0198). The remains of a female aged between 21 and 40 years were located in a shallow trench. It was subsequently learned that other skeletons had been uncovered during the construction of the dwelling but were unreported. (Buckley, 2002). Probably part of the same cemetery mentioned in the OS field books (see CW013-088----). Refrence: Buckley L. 2002 Rathoe, Co. Carlow, Skeletal Report (Excavation Licence No. 02E0198). Unpublished report, National Monuments Service, Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Compiled by: Claire Breen Date of upload: 27 January 2012
