Kilmurry Church (in ruins), Graveyard

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 22 December 2009 Revised by: J. Farrelly Roughly centrally placed within a graveyard (CW013-020002-). Referred to as 'Ballyrownery' (nave dims. 8.16m x 5.9m; chancel dims. 6.6m x 5.3m) (JKAS 1933, 302). Present remains consist of S, W and portions of N and E walls of rectangular church chiefly rebuilt prior to 1839 by Eustace family as mortuary chapel. Entrance (modern in W gable. Possible window splay visible in E wall. Very little of N wall now standing. Corbel and possible piscina in E wall (JRSAI 1933, 303). Only portion of church which is substantially ancient is E gable, with traces of window, rectangular recess and possible corbel, all of which indicate considerably lower floor than present level.
